Avismed is a family medicine practice in Hanau, about 20 minutes from Frankfurt. We look after patients of all ages — from acute illness to long-term care — and several members of our team speak English and Turkish.
If you have recently moved to the Rhine-Main area, this page explains how the German system works and how to become our patient.
We are accepting new patients
You are welcome to register with us. Bring your electronic health card (elektronische Gesundheitskarte) to your first appointment. If you have private insurance, your insurance details are enough.
To save time, you can fill in our new patient questionnaire online before you arrive.
Public and private insurance
We treat both statutory (gesetzlich, e.g. TK, AOK, Barmer, DAK) and private patients, as well as self-payers.
If you are publicly insured, most of what is described below is covered by your insurance and you pay nothing at the practice. Some preventive services are not covered — we will always tell you in advance what a service costs before we carry it out.
How the German system works
In Germany, your Hausarzt (family doctor) is your first point of contact for almost everything medical. Rather than going straight to a specialist, you see your family doctor first. We examine you, treat what we can, and refer you to a specialist when that is the right step.
This has a practical advantage: your results, medications and history stay in one place, which makes your care safer and usually faster.
You may also hear about the Hausarztprogramm (HZV). It is a voluntary programme run by the statutory insurers in which you agree to see your family doctor first. It costs you nothing and gives you better coordinated care. We are happy to enrol you.
